The Old Hay Field
Hemer Farm
(Homesteaded in 1860, the farm
is now Hemer Provincial Park.)
This marshland used to be a field
where the Hemers grew hay for their
dairy cows.  Beaver dams have now
caused it to flood, providing a perfect
spot for birds--and bird watchers.

A PERSONAL NOTE:  Hemer Farm, which belonged to old family friends, is where my grandparents lived as a young couple.  During summer vacations when we were children, Mom sometimes took us to visit "Auntie" Kate, the matriarch, and her family.  By 1981, John and Violet (brother and sister) were the last of the Hemers, and neither had ever married, so they willed the land to the Province of British Columbia to insure that it would be preserved instead of cut up into condo lots.  The 93 hectare (230 acre) park is located a few miles from Nanaimo, BC, on Vancouver Island. -- JMG
